WEST BENGAL INDUSTRY AT A GLANCE

West Bengal is a state in eastern India, with Calcutta (now Kolkata) being the capital during British India. Being the knowledge and cultural hub of the country it was once an era when industrial growth flourished from British period till the government of Late Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy. The state of West Bengal has gone through various phases of economic paralysis, poverty, unemployment and lack of industrialization. Bengal was amongst the first regions where the British established their trade centers. The four industries that dominated Bengal’s economy are- coal, jute, iron and steel and engineering. INTUC has been committed and playing a significant role in maintaining a rational and judicious balance between capitalist classes and labour movement where almost 140,000 workers have lost their jobs and we have expressed our deepest sense of dissatisfaction towards it and committedly trying to build a congenial industrial atmosphere in the State
